Respectable woman

The short story "A Respectable Woman" by Kate Chopin is about Mrs. Baroda, who is disappointed to learn that her husband's friend, Gouvernail, will be staying with them at their plantation. She had never met him before but had formed a negative image of him in her mind. However, when he arrives, she finds him to be a lovable and inoffensive fellow, which puzzles her. She becomes increasingly intrigued by him and seeks to spend more time with him, eventually imposing her company on him. She confesses to her husband that Gouvernail tires her and wishes he were more like other guests they had entertained. Her husband assures her that Gouvernail would not want or expect any commotion, but she continues to feel conflicted about her attraction to him. The story ends with her finally succumbing to her desires and feeling guilty about it.
